How To

1. Create a KML or KMZ file
Use Google Earth or Android™ apps such as My Tracks to create a KML or KMZ file of Placemarks and Paths.

2. Install and start the AugmentThis! app for Android™
AugmentThis! launches into a map view as its home screen.

3. Upload KML and KMZ files to this web site
If you create KML or KMZ files with Google Earth, use the Upload section to upload the files.
It is also possible to upload KML files from your device. They need to be stored on the SD card, in the directory /kml. Apps such as My Tracks store KML files there.
In order to upload KML files from your device, call "My uploads" from AugmentThis!'s main menu. This displays a list of personal uploads which you previously uploaded to this web site, and the KML files found on the SD card. Note that My Tracks does not create Paths when stored in KML.
Uploads marked "Tap to upload to augmentthis.appspot.com" are the KML files that were found on the SD card. These need to be uploaded to the server before they can be viewed. Depending on file size and data connectivity, uploads can take several seconds, so AugmentThis! returns back to the map view after the upload has started. An "up" arrow icon indicates that an upload is underway. When completed, the arrow icon changes to a check mark icon . AugmentThis! accesses this upload as soon as the upload has completed.

4. Select a KML or KMZ file upload
There are three ways to access KML and KMZ files:
    - Find your personal uploads by calling "My uploads" from the main menu
    - Tap the map view to find your personal, as well as the public uploads in the area where you tap the map view.
    - Use "Search" from the main menu to find personal and public uploads at the device location.
AugmentThis! calls this web site to find KML and KMZ file uploads, and displays the KML file uploads in a list. After an upload has been selected from the list, AugmentThis! tries to acquire the device location through an active location provider, such as GPS satellites. The location acquisition may take a few seconds, depending on the availability and quality of GPS signals at the device location. In the case that GPS is the location provider that AugmentThis! uses to acquire the location, Android™ displays a blinking satellite in the status bar .

5. Finally - Placemarks and Paths have been found
Once the device location has been acquired, the closest ten Placemarks, and Paths, within a 3200m (approx. 10,000ft) distance of the device location are displayed on the map view.

6. The Augmented Reality view
The "Augment!" menu item switches to the Augmented Reality view of AugmentThis!

7. Moving about
Following the device's location, the AugmentThis! app queries this web site to display dynamic updates of the selected KML file.

8. Hyperlinks
If the description of the Placemark includes a web address, AugmentThis! opens the Android™ web browser for that web address when the Placemark label is tapped.

A few tips: Use the phone's back button to clear the selected upload.
Saving KML or KMZ files in Google Earth can be a bit tricky. Before saving, it is important to select the place range correctly. Otherwise, only a single Placemark may be saved.
AugmentThis! includes a variety of supporting features, such as a partial screen lock mode to prevent screen orientation switches and responses to screen taps, as well as manual requests for map centering and server refresh.
At this point, AugmentThis! supports KML Placemarks and Paths. Tours, Polygons and other advanced KML elements are not supported yet.
I cannot upload my file.
There are a few limitations. Uploads are limited to 1000 placemarks and a 128KB file size, and uploads must conform to the OGC KML 2.2 standard. 20 uploads limit per user. Limits will be raised based on system utilization and performance. Stay tuned!
I've defined Path colors in my KML file, but only orange color is displayed.
Startng wih version 1.3, AugmentThis! displays the path colors from the KML and KMZ files. This means that either the path does not have a color definition, or you are running an old version of the AugmentThis! app for Anrdoid™.
What kind of mobile phones support AugmentThis! ?
The AugmentThis! app can be downloaded from the Android™ Market. It has been tested on a device with 320x240 screen size, and requires location provider (e.g. GPS) and compass sensors.
How do I switch from right hand to left hand layout and back?
Quickly flip the device down and up. This motion rotates the Placemark labels between left and right handed layout.
